Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

I wear size 11.5 shoes. I got size M and L in these socks--M fit far better. I used these as liner socks for my 4-6 mile workout hikes with 35 llb loaded in my pack. These don't stick to my feet like some other socks--these socks allow my feet to rub against these socks on the soles. They bunch up under the soles. After my walk today, I turned the socks inside out to look at the weave and noticed excessive wear after only about 15 miles. I doubt mine will last long. BTW, the weave seems a bit coarse to work as liner socks for me. I used the Fox River silver socks on the Wonderland Trail without significant problems over 93 miles. They had a finer weave and bunched up less. The Fox River socks stuck to my feetbetter than the Smartwooll but not as well as other synthetic socks.

For me, these socks will do for casual wear, but not as liners for loaded walking.

Abrasions and blisters in rough terrain

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

On a casual hike, these worked okay, so I wore them on a strenuous three-day climbing trip in the North Cascades. The trip involved 8,000 feet of vertical gain, 16 miles of mountain biking, 13 miles of hiking on a maintained trail, about 8 miles of bushwhacking through extremely rough terrain, and several miles of travel over summer snow, mostly in crampons. By the end of the first day, my feet were already hurting. The second and third days, my feet looked and felt as if they'd been tortured by interrogators from a brutal dictatorship. The socks bunched up and were extremely rough and abrasive. My feet sustained the worst damage they've ever felt in more than 40 years of backpacking. By the end of the trip the sides, heels, and soles of my feet had multiple blisters and giant, painful, bright- red abrasions. One blister was bigger than a quarter. My boots were unlikely to have been the cause of the injuries, because they fit well, were thoroughly broken in, had been in use for several seasons, and had caused no problems with previous wick socks. The socks did dry out overnight when worn over thick dry wool socks in my light sleeping bag. But that advantage doesn't offset their nightmarish abrasiveness. Not recommended for off-trail backcountry travel or climbing.

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

I bought these sock liners 3 years ago, and I have hiked in them numerous times with my Asolo TPS 520 boots. I have summited a Colorado 14er, Mount Lindsay, in them, and I have hiked in 100+ F heat in TX.

I have NEVER had a blister since switching to these socks. They stay attached to my foot skin much better than any other liner I have ever used. I have use polypropylene and other synthetic materials for liner socks prior to these, and an REI employee suggested I try them out. I will never go back. My feet always come out of the boot completely dry, and they don't smell as bad as compared to other liner socks. They seem to hold up well as I've washed them probably 30 times, and I've hiked over 100 miles in them. The way they don't slide around on my foot is incredible.

As I understand it, wool is a true wicking material in that the outside of the wool is hydrophobic with small pores that open to a hydrophyllic core inside the wool fiber. This means the wool itself is actively absorbing and wicking moisture away from your foot. Synthetic materials are entirely hydrophobic so they just allow the air in between fibers to pull moisture away. When that air becomes saturated with moisture, wicking breaks down and you get sweat accumulation. This has NEVER happened to me with the wool socks.

I love these liner socks! Perfect weight, keep my feet warm enough when it is cold, but cool when it's hot. They also wick nicely and are quite comfortable. I used them daily while working last summer wearing steel toe boots. They held up well, but did start to pill. They still have lots of life left in them, though!

I like these liners. They fit well and were comfortable. The only negative thing I can say is that my feet were a bit hot when the weather got hot, but they were great in cold weather. But all in all, I like them a lot.

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

I use these socks as my every day dress socks to work.
They are a bit long and slide down the shin a bit during the day. However, they are still my best dress socks.
The most important function in my opinion is that they retain no odor and after having them for 2 years there are no durability issues.

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

These are the best liners I have had so far. I have been working in Prudhoe Bay, AK for the last 5 years in the winter so I know what cold means. One of the many great features about these liners is that they wick the moisture so well. As I'm sure you know, it doesn't matter how warm/cold your boots are, if your socks are wet, your toes are froze. The other stand-out feature of these socks are their durability. I bought other liners last year as well, REI's Silk One and their synthetic liners. The synthetics did alright, but they would ALWAYS bunch up at the toes of my boots by the end of the day. The silk liners were fine for the price, but they had holes in the heels by the end of the winter. My Smartwool liners still fit like the day I bought them without any sign of wear as of yet. Absolutely worth the extra couple bucks that you will spend over the silk or synthetic liners. I also wear them as regular socks when I'm at home, the only issue I have with that is I'm constantly having to steal them back from my wife!

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

I originally bought these as liners to help prevent blisters while hiking in a new pair of boots in Yosemite. They did a great job and my feet were thankful I bought them. Since then they have turned into my favorite dress socks and I wear them on a regular basis to the office.

There are 2 primary reasons why I view these as being better than other "dress" socks:

Number one, I wear a size 13 shoe and most socks are sized to fit up to a size 12. This results in the heel and toes wearing out extremely fast. An XL in these puppies fit perfectly and I have no such problems. I have had these for 3+ years and they are still good as new.

The second issue I have with most dress socks is that they stretch out with wear or conversely shrink in the wash. Not the case with any of the Smartwool socks I own (and I have quite a few). These have retained their elasticity and fit and I have absolutely no issues with them falling down.

Overall I am extremely pleased with these socks.

Comments about SmartWool Merino Wool Liner Socks:

I am replacing every cotton sock I own with these liners. I wear them as an only sock on a daily basis and I find the comfort great in all seasons. OK, all seasons in the NW, if I were still in TX no sock is comfortable in 105 degrees.
The fit is great, the temperature control is great and the wicking is very good. I now find cotton socks are too damp and cool.
I use other SmartWool to hike and have not had blister or comfort issues so I have not yet used these as liners. But as everyday socks, they are superb!
