I bought a Katadyn Pocket Filter 20 years ago. In fact, it is still in great shape and going strong. I recently purchased the newest model because of the improvements Katadyn made.

Yes, for hiking or backpacking, this filter is slightly heavier than all the other plastic pump filters out there, but here is what I love about this filter: it is made of quality solid materials, which means fewer moving parts; the ceramic element can be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled in the backcountry in a matter of minutes; and it will filter down to 0.2 microns, clean up to 13,000 gallons, and comes with a 20 year manufacturers warranty.

This is the best filter if you want one that is going to last and be reliable on long hikes. The only issue that I do have is that it is heavy, but to have the quality that this one has, the weight is a must. This problem becomes a non-problem, however, when you have more than 3 people in your group, because you can share it and the weight is split among the group. I read a review on here of someone having an issue with cloudy water? They must have gotten a defective filter element, because I have never had a problem like this. I have used it on many multi-day backpacking trips without any issue! Way to go Katadyn. And the 20 year warrranty is awesome.

From the reviews I've read I really thought this would be an amazing filter to have forever. After getting mine First thing I did was test it at home. I used regular tap water, after pumping about half a gallon or so i poured the water out assuming it would be a little bad since it has never been used. After continuing I noticed the water looked worse after it went through the filter than before it did. There was a ring of some material that was very noticable in the water. Clean water asside, there was water leaking from the screw right above of the out spout. I contacted support through email and the first time they responded asking questions that I had already answered in the origional description after about 24 hours. I sent them more detailed information and just heard from them again 6 days later... I have already returned it and went with another much cheaper lightweight Sawyer filter that seems to work great.

I feel that if the product would work, it would work well, but I'm glad it didn't for me since I found a good filter that is much cheaper and lighter. Not to mention the replacement filters are about $200 for the Katadyn.

I used this filter on a recent primitive camping trip. Rather than carry my water 2 miles from the Park Office, I filtered water from a small stream near my tent. The particular area from which I got my water was only about 6 inches deep and the bottom was covered in leaves. This was my first time using the filter so I was a little worried about drinking the water. However, I got all my water (and for my dog) from that little source for 4 days and had no problems. At first I added a flavor packet to all my drinking water in order to mask any ill tastes, but after about day 2 I got tired of that and drank just plain water...the water had NO taste...good, bad, or otherwise. In fact, the water I filtered was cleaner than the water I got from the Park Office water fountain!

You never know where you'll find yourself while camping and the peace of mind that Kataydan provides with this amazing water filtration unit is hands down the most reliable. I like the idea of some fancy wand that sterilizes everything, but the truth is they're more questionable than anything. Altitude, temperature and batteries don't effect the quality you receive from this. I'm happy to know that I have it and can rely upon it whenever necessary!

My first Katadyn I purchased in the 1980's. It did an excellent job and gave great service for group and individual hikes for many years. It finally wore out.

The new filter is just as good and is easier to operate. It is heavy by I can hike with only a liter of water, since filterable water is readily available on most NW hikes.

This is definite necessity in the back country. Took this filter to Yellowstone, and it performed flawlessly. Although it is on the pricier side for a filter it will pay for itself in a few uses. You will have to purge the filter when it is new to get the ceramic minerals out, but after that you will have clean clear water. I paired this up with the Katadyn in-line carbon filter and water tasted like artisan water you get from the market. If you are in the market for a bulletproof filter that is built to last, look no further and click the buy button.

I use this for all paddling and hiking adventures. Extremely reliable!! Low maintenance!!! Cleans in seconds!!! Pumps slightly more difficult and slower than high end paper filter types and yet my kids use it to fill the containers most of the time. Its seems the ceramic filter will last forever.

I've been using this filter for more than 2 years and almost in all of the major treks I was able to bring it with me. Most water sources in the Philippine Mountains come from streams or underwater holes and usually turbid during the summer season. The filter became a life-saver not just for me but for my entire group and even other groups that we encountered along the trail. I have a very sensitive stomach and this filter worked for me. I used this Katadyn Pocket filter along with the Katadyn carbon cartridge while backpacking in the Sierras and will be taking this filter with me on future trips. Who cares if this filter weighs a few more ounces? It's totally worth it!!! The water this Katadyn produces tastes like bottled Aquafina or Sparklett's. I was able to fill up a 2 liter Platypus bottle in about 4 minutes. Very durable, occupies little pack space, and well worth the investment as the filter has a 13,000 gallon life!!
