Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
While others have mentioned that their shovel folded on them during use, mine never has.
In fact, my shovel requires a strong two hand squeeze in order to collapse the handle to the point where it will pass the tangs on the shovel head and allow closure.
I would suggest that prior to purchasing, you check the force nescessary to close the handle from the open position.
Great for digging cat holes, breaking bark off of dead logs for your camp fires, moving hot coals, and trenching around your tent, should you suspect an oncoming rain storm.
I carry this while backpacking.

Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
In hard soil the folding handle will fold up on you and can pinch your hand. This can be quite painful. Also if you plan to put this in a pocket or inside your pack without the case, beware, it can and probably will catch and tear something. I am going to try the plastic one, but something tells me that it will likely break in harder ground...

Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
This was great for cathole-digging. It's light, sturdy, and the carrying case hooked on to the outside of my pack easily. Mostly, I forgot about it until I needed it. Very happy with this purchase.

Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
Good little shovel to use for digging small holes or fire pits. The price is hard to swallow but it is lighter than most metal shovels and much stronger than the plastic ones. Only thing I'd be careful about is that it could close on you if you are overly aggressive but not too easily done.

Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
This is the shovel I have selected and used repeatedly on the trail. It is light weight and handy. The only downside is that in rocky soil, the handle lock tends to fail with moderate pressure. It takes getting used to. The handle should be strengthened by an improved design.

Comments about U-Dig-It Stainless-Steel Hand Shovel:
This shovel is very durable. One of our favorite trail tricks is to split the end of a thumb sized stick, insert the shovel handle and cinch it down with some natural fibre string. Now you have a handle about three feet long, and the shovel can be used to retrieve coals from your fire for baking. We use this technique to make biscuits, pizza pockets and other stuff in a small skillet.
Of course it also does other shovel things pretty good (cat holes, fire holes, etc) but if you are into multi purpose durable kit this is a good buy.
