Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
I've had my Sweetwater filter for several years. I don't use it often, but when I do, it always works well. It takes about 3 minutes to fill a 24oz bottle from a clear water source. My only complaint is the plastic shell on the filter cracks over time, causing leaks. The only reason I've ever needed to replace a filter (twice so far) was due to the cracks in the shell.

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
In water that is moderately silty, this filter requires frequent cleaning (every two liters?). If you're operating in really silty water, I would suggest using the included pre-filter, scrubbing the filter with the included brush every liter or so, and (if possible) putting some unfiltered water in an intermediate container (e.g. gallon jug) to allow the silt to settle and stay out of your way while you pump.
As another user pointed out in their review, the replacement cartridge would surely be cheaper if they DIDN'T include the hard plastic shell with it. However, there are circumstances when this is a benefit, such as when a loved one accidentally loses the cartridge in the river while trying to clean it, leaving the filter's owner without the cartridge AND the shell. :-P
More duality of the product: The plastic seems like it could break easily, and in fact, I've heard of the plastic breaking on these types of filters. But, if the cartridge's plastic shell breaks, at least you get one for "free" with your new cartridge.

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
I've owned my sweetwater for almost 20 years and last week was the first time I really needed it. After pre cleaning with the brush per the instructions and then filtering some water to clear out the black carbon it worked great. I was backpacking solo on the Vivien Creek trail to the summit of San Gorgonio in Southern California and enjoyed not having to haul extra water up 6000' in 8 miles. The reviewer who stated that it filters 1 liter in 30 minutes probably didn't pre clean the inside of the filter with the included brush. They sell a pre filter for silt so if you're going to Utah fork over the extra $20 and save the main filter. This little thing is great.

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
Ok. I should explain this. My brand new filter was
dead after attempting to filter river water that had a very fine silt (fine enough to kill my camera also) on the Escalante River in Utah. It happened very quickly, I'd say after pumping about 1/2 liter of river water, and that was it for the filter. We were able to get by boiling water for the last day, but this would have been a disaster at the start of a long trip. Next time I need to look at pumps with a pre-filter.
So, to be clear, I've used the pump very happily on other trips, but it seems quite easily harmed by very fine wind blown silt in water.

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
I live near the Appalachain Trail. I watched witch filters were being used and asked to try a few before I purchased a Sweet Water. This was the most widely used filter I noticed on the trail. I have never had a problem. Filters last along time and are easy to clean. For the money it out performs other filters easily!

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
The case and filter are is one unit making filter replacement expensive. The plastic case cracked after limited use. I am not aware of any hard impacts, which might cause such failure. The unit should be able to handle typical backpacking use and abuse.

Comments about MSR SweetWater Filter Cartridge:
I've had my Sweetwater pump for well over 20 years, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Living and hiking in the cascade Mt., I've never had a problem with silt. The water is usually clear and flowing. I did freeze the first filter for over 4 years, and the freezer taste in the purified water was bad. A replacement filter was cost effective, and all was good
