Comments about MSR Alpine 4 Pot Set:
I've had my MSR pots for almost 20 years, and I have subjected them to TONS of abuse, and they still look and perform as they did the day I took them home from the store. This is a GREAT all-around cookset that can expand to fit your needs. Another reviewer said that it is "bombproof" and that certainly is the best word to describe how well this has held up.I have purchased the 1000ml, 1500ml, and 2000ml pots separately over the years, and each one has its niche that it fills nicely. This kit is called a 4 pot kit (I only count three), but if you had the 1500ml pot (best all around), it would be a perfect 4 pots.Let's get one thing settled up front: there is NO 5 star cook system. Each cook system has its strengths and weaknesses. The weakness for any stainless cookset is the weight when compared to aluminum or titanium. The non-coated aluminum and titanium pots are IMPOSSIBLE to clean and you will spend hours trying to keep them in good shape. Coated titanium lulls you into thinking you can cook on it, and then burns your food, unless you hover over it.Titanium is perfect for boiling water to rehydrate meals or make hot drinks. That's it. If you try to cook on it, you will spend more food energy cleaning them than you save in weight carrying them. It's also VERY pricey.Aluminum (anodized and non-stick) is great for back country culinary masterpieces, but that's it. They are bulky and can't take the beating stainless can.Stainless heats water very well, has a reasonable range of things it can cook, and cleans up to a brand new condition with relatively little effort. At the end of a trip, all you need is two minutes with Bar Keepers Friend (it's like Comet cleanser, but with oxalic acid that is perfect for cleaning stainless and copper), and your stainless pots will look brand-spankin' new.Stainless can also take a beating, and do so on a budget. I've dug snow caves with mine, stored Esbit stoves, stainless flatware, MSR Whisperlite cook stoves (1500ml pot is perfect for the Whisperlite), and it took it all without damaging it. Anodized/nonstick aluminum would be ruined after one exposure to that kind of use.The shape of the pots will save needless wear and tear on your other gear as they are packed together. You never have to worry about fraying your pack, or destroying your fuel bottles, or other hard gear. The rounded corners are part of what makes it so easy to clean. There are no rivets or external flanges on the pots (there are on the lids), so there is no place for residue or gunk to hang up and evade the pot scrubber. I carry a green scrubber and it works perfectly. When I solo, I take my 1000ml pot. It weighs 9.2oz, and that includes the lid/frypan. The MSR titanium teakettle has less capacity and doesn't have a lid that can function as a pan/plate. Even so, the weight penalty is only 5oz. For that 5oz, your versatility is much higher (can cook a wider range of food) and your cleanup is a cinch. The 1000ml pot can store (all at once):Esbit stove + 4 tabsPepsi can stoveCampsudspot grabberLight My Fire flint/steelemergency matchespot scrubbersalt/pepper shakerfolding knifesmall spoonI primarily use it with an alcohol stove and it is perfect. It heats a full Nalgene bottle of water and is just right for one person on a solo trip. It is perfect for making coffee, tea, hot choc, etc., when you stop for a break. The 1500ml pot does all its little brother does, but it holds a full Whisperlite white gas stove. It can cook a pot of spaghetti for two people and boil a full liter with no fear of boiling over. The 1500ml and 2000ml pot share a common lid/frypan.The 2000ml pot is mainly used when the family goes camping and we can divide the gear among the various packs. It can cook a full oatmeal breakfast for 5. I would imagine the 3000ml pot is best used for large parties (like Scouts). [...]I've read one review of how the stainless rusted through. It is the only incident that I have seen where stainless rusted. Halogen salts can penetrate the protective coating that stainless forms when exposed to oxygen, and if the attack is accelerated by heat, especially without the presence of oxygen, more damage will occur. I've camped on the beach and boiled sea water (to say nothing of soups and tomato sauces), and there has never been one hint of corrosion. I'm pushing 20 years with my pots. [...] I returned Nalgene bottles after 5 years, and they didn't give me one bit of static. My only gripe about how REI sells these pots is they are always bundled in a set. I wish they would sell them ala carte, so you can pick and choose what you need.If you are an Ultra Light purist, this isn't for you. If you are a back country gourmet that doesn't mind the expense, bulk, weight and limited use of anodized aluminum+nonstick, then you might try something else.If you are an all around back country hiker that wants to be able to do just about everything and can afford an extra 5-8oz, and wants this to be the last set of pots you buy, this is for you. I bought mine in the early 90s and haven't looked back.

Comments about MSR Alpine 4 Pot Set:
I take EXCELLENT care of all of my gear. I camp out about 1 weekend a month, but used this particular MSR cook set only a few times a year for the past year few years. I clean it and store it dry as soon as I get home. It developed rust on the bottom of the large pot about the size of a quarter on the outside and it rusted clean through about the size of a pinhole on the inside! MSR will not replace their product because I don't have the receipt from years ago. This is MSR stainless steel that rusts! It never came into contact with anything corrosive, I keep it stored with the rest of my gear in a clean trunk, ready for my next trip. I am extremely disappointed by the poor quality of this MSR product and will never buy another MSR cook set.

Comments about MSR Alpine 4 Pot Set:
This set of pots are terreffic. The POTS are. However, the lids do not double as pans. This would be 5 stars if they did double.

Comments about MSR Alpine 4 Pot Set:
Troop 6 tested these pots on 5 stoves at 20 degrees. Boiled 1 pint water on each stove for test. On the Whisperlite Internationale, an uncovered pot took 6 minutes and thirty seconds to boil; adding the lid (which fits very well), dropped the boiling time by a minute and a half; fitting it with the heat exchanger and cover together, reduced the boiling time to just four minutes. This is our primary cookwear for hiking and kayaking. Excellent. Very durable. Holds up to Scouts use.

Comments about MSR Alpine 4 Pot Set:
All items fit within the large pot for easy storage, and altogether the set is very light. The pots also distribute the heat very evenly.
