Comments about Garmin eTrex GPS:
Don't know how I got along without this little unit before. Marking waypoints and using the track back can keep you from getting lost in the wilderness. Also, being able to enter coordinates beforehand can get you to a destination when there is no trail. For a basic unit it's great. However if you frequently hike in canyons or dense areas you may want a unit with a better antenna as you will lose your satellite signal in these areas with this unit.

it's simple to use and reliable when the signal is strong.

Comments about Garmin eTrex GPS:
I have the original version of the E trex which looks to be the same one here. It does lose the signals when blocked by trees. If you need to use a GPS while hiking in tree cover then this may not be the best unit.
I bought it to use on sea kayak & canoe trips and it works very well in this application. I have some older National Geo mapping software. I can plan a complete trip on the computer and then upload it to the E Trex. Then when on the water it easily follows all waypoints and directs me through the trip. It works really well this way.
Be aware that an optional cable is needed to connect to a computer but it's worth the extra cost and makes this a very capable unit.

Comments about Garmin eTrex GPS:
This is an excellent all-around GPS receiver and makes a great starter unit for someone new to GPS. Its controls are very easy to use and it gives all the "must-haves", although it lacks advanced features found on more costly units. Takes only minutes from opening the box to using it hiking. I've hiked 3 continents and climbed 5 mountains (>14K ft) with it. We have three in our family. Usually found on sale around [$].

Comments about Garmin eTrex GPS:
I found this easy to use and easy to see. I like the mounting accessories for it. I can take it hiking or biking in the pouring rain. I've had lots of fun geo-caching. The instruction manual was clear and concise- even though I don't think I really needed to read it.
