    An amazing tent

    This tent has many pros, and very few cons. As such, I'll start with the negative.

    It's a touch on the heavy/burly side. Being a convertible tent it's very sturdy, but at the price of being a little burly. Fortunately it's also a two-point-five person tent (2 people plus gear) so you would normally split the load between at least 2, so the weight issue becomes relatively moot. Also, there are many, many, many heavier tents out there that are significantly less sturdy, durable, and roomy.

    On the positive side, it's an amazing two-person tent. It's got plenty of interior space for two plus gear, the vestibule is roomy and will protect packs, shoes, harnesses, whatever. The rainfly is full-coverage and dry. The ventilation system is almost perfect - I wish there was more mesh - but I understand why it doesn't have more: it's a convertible tent... in colder weather the vents are perfect. More vents would mean more zippers, which mean increased weight, and a tent that gets colder at night. So no, I think the balance is fine - I just do a lot of camping in the Southeast, and it gets mighty hot in the summer.

    Setup is unbelievably fast and easy. I've set this tent up solo, at night, by headlamp, in under 5 minutes. If there's one thing that Sierra Designs does without parallel, it's that.

    The raintarp goes up quick and relatively easy, although you might think you're doing something wrong because it goes on tight as a drum when you're done. I've personally attached the tarp just before a rainstorm, again by headlamp, in about 3-5 minutes. Very fast and easy to do.

    Mountain Hardwear makes a very, very similar tent design, but it's significantly more expensive. I've used both tents and studied them both, and the Sierra Designs Omega CD is, in my opinion, the better value.

    For a two-person convertible tent, I haven't found anything better. If you're not planning on any cold weather camping whatsoever, there are lighter options available, however.

    I got this tent in order to have sturdier accomodations for climbing volcanoes in the Cascades (e.g. Rainier and Baker). I experienced very high winds (gusts to 50mph), and the tent leaned a tad, but held up nicely.

    It has numerous guy-out points which greatly enhance its stability.

    It's "3-season lightweight mode" is really heavier than any backpacker would want.

    The shape of the top of the tent suggests that, in a snowstorm, snow could pile up and put stress on the fly (though I haven't experienced these conditions).

    The vestibule door of the fly is flappy in the wind, and it seems impossible to get a (relatively) taut pitch on both the door and the fly; seems one or the other must be selected.

    This tent is very palatial, and you could comfortably wait out a storm in here. In this sense, it can serve good dual purposes of being a sturdy and spacious car camping tent, as well as a decent summer mountaineering tent as well.

    Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    Some may prefer 2 rather than 1 vestibule...but one good sized is better than 2 smaller.
    You may find this on the heavier side, but remember it is 4 season capable (even so, with components left behind for summer camping, it still may seem a bit heavy by todays standards)
    BUT I like the feel of a sturdy tent and don't mind the extra weight for extra secuity! This is one sturdy tent!
