Comments about Kelty Noah's Tarp - 9' x 9':
A few years ago my husband and I added the Noah's Tarp 9X9 to our backpacking gear, even though we really didn't want more weight. However, we typically camp at high elevations in Colorado, where it rains almost daily, usually around cooking time.
Noah's tarp has truly been a great addition, well worth the few ounces, and the catenary cut is far superior to any plain old rectangular tarp we ever used. This tarp is very easy to set up; we just suspend it from a lightweight rope between two trees and then guy down the points (it has a diamond shape when pitched). The design allows for many different configurations, so we've never had trouble fitting it into our campsite. It's plenty large for two people to sit, cook, and eat under at a backcountry camp, even while sharing the space with pack gear we want to keep out of the rain. High country rains (which admittedly are not usually driving but still can be nasty) don't seem to get under the edges, either. In short, it has kept us dry (hence warm) and has saved many a frigid, wet packing trip.
About the size--9X9 is surprisingly luxurious. For backpacking, don't even consider a larger size unless you routinely pack with 4 or more people who all need to be under the same tarp.
Unless you camp in treeless areas, forget the extra (and expensive) poles. We've never needed them. DO take instead a long, lightweight line, enough to go the tarp's length diagonally plus around two trees--I'd recommend at least 25 feet and more is better. The lines that come with the tarp are really only good for guying out the edges.
We rarely car-camp so I can't offer recommendations if that's how you're going to use it. I'm not going camping anywhere without this tarp ever again, though!

I found this and decided that it would be a very welcome alternate to the "Blue Tarp" campsites that King County Explorer Search and Rescue usually winds up creating while we're out on trainings and missions.
I was right - the multiple attachment points and generous size make it possible to keep rain and wind off of you and several other folks.
Make sure that you have enough cord or poles/trees to keep it tight, otherwise the material gets soaked and may drip on you - I've only had one or two drops ever come off it, and that was after 10 hours of rainfall. Root Cause in that case was sagging material: operator error :>
Purchase this and some lightweight poles and cord, plus a good ground tarp, and you'll sleep well and be ultralight!

I use this with a hammock, and I have plenty of room to stash my gear under in case of rain. It's lightweight and has withstood whatever I've thrown at it.

I used this for the first time recently and it worked out very well for me.
I set it up at two different campsites two nights in a row. It poured down raining both nights and this shelter kept the water off me while I prepared dinner. Like another reviewer suggested, I hung a cord between two trees and set up the shelter over that. I was able to tie off one of the sides to another tree and made a pole for the fourth side. This gave me plenty of room to walk around.
I think for more than four people it'd be cramped if it rained. It's perfect for two or three.
I also set up a hammock and this shelter is IDEAL for usage with a hammock. Next trip I may ditch the tent and just bring the shelter with a hammock and mosquito net (I have one that'd be perfect for this that I got from my time in the army). Maybe even a cot for car camping.

In southeast Alaska shelter from the rain is top on everyone's list. I carry this tarp every day and it's made extremely wet days workable. It's light, it's durable, it's fairly cheap and works well.

Haven't actually used this yet, but the stuff sack it came is way too big. It's oblong and awkward, so I picked up an REI small Tuff Stuff Sack, and that works much better.
The tarp includes guylines and tent stakes, and those fit in the small sack too.

This tarp works awsome. I spent 4 days in the Olympics and we got rained on every day. This tarp provided a dry space for our group to cook and hang out together despite the wet weather.
I have tried numerous set ups with this tarp and hanging it between two trees is the best. There was plenty of room for the tree of us, four would be a little cramped.

By far not the lightest on the market but for the price range, this is a fantastic tarp. Ditch the stuff sack and the guy lines that come with this tarp. You can pack this much smaller than the sack and who ever thought black would be a good idea for guy lines has never been camping in the dark!
I take this along with me when my trail buddies and I are planning on sleeping under the stars. We set this up just in case and it has come in handy when the weather turns unexpectedly. We've fit 5 people and one dog under this tarp in a downpour that awoke us at 4am! A quick scramble under the tarp and no one got soaked trying to set up their tents in the rain. It was a tight fit, true, but doable and with a little snuggling we all slept well for the remainder of the night.
This will be our shelter of choice for trips with 3 or 4 people from now on so we can all lighten our loads and leave the heavy shelters at home.

I love the weight and versatility of the tarp. Multiple ways to set it up. Stuff sack is slightly oversized which makes take-down and storage very easy. Included guy lines and stakes are very easy to use.
