South Mountains State Park Trails
South Mountains State Park is the largest and loftiest of the mountain ranges that lie east of the Blue Ridge. The South Mountains sprawl across 100,000 acres in three counties, with 18,000 acres included in the park (just 7,500 acres in the Jacob Creek watershed is open to the public by trail). Luckily, substantial unused backcountry of the Henry Fork and Clear Creek watersheds seems likely to see trail development. Until then, the existing parcel is amply laced with trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The park’s 18-mile mountain-bike loop is a rare state park opportunity. Descriptions of the following trails are included: the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail, Hemlock Nature Trail, Sawtooth Trail, Horseridge Trail, Possum Trail, Sinny Trail, Headquarters Trail, Turkey Ridge Trail, Little River Trail and the Upper Falls Trail.
