Beginning at the outskirts of the Bitterroot Valley, the Ward Mountain Trail climbs 4,850 vertical feet in 4 miles to reach a former lookout site at the summit. An undertaking of nearly medieval brutality on a hot August afternoon, the Ward Mountain Trail is suitable only for those in reasonably good physical condition. Quite possibly it is the single most exhausting trail in the entire Bitterroot Range. Highlights: A lofty vantage running the entire length of the Bitterroot Valley.
