Swan Lake, MT
This trail accesses the alpine ridges at the headwaters of Long Creek, after a long passage through the lowlands of the Upper Twin Creek drainage. The trail receives relatively light use, making it an ideal destination for those who seek solitude. From the trail’s beginning beside the Hungry Horse Reservoir East Side Road, the trail crosses a flat bench to reach the base of a steep hillside. The trail climbs across this grassy west-facing slope, then turns east to follow the valley of Upper Twin Creek. The trail passes in and out of a mixed forest, staying high above the level of the creek. The cliffs of Beacon Mountain rise above the trail to the northeast. The trail ascends gradually, crossing a wooded tableland at the foot of this peak, then continues eastward to reach a high overlook point above the creek. From this vantage point, the distant peaks along the Continental Divide can be seen along the horizon.
