West Glacier, MT
A day hike or backpack from North McDonald Road Trailhead to Trout Lake, 3.5 miles (5.5 km); North McDonald Road to Arrow Lake Campground, 6.9 miles (11 km); North McDonald Road Trailhead to Camas Lake, 10.5 miles (17 km); or Glacier Route 7 to Camas Lake, 13.9 miles (22.5 km). The lakes of Camas Creek can be reached by a low-maintenance, brushy trail up the creek from the Inside North Fork Road or by using a well-maintained cutoff trail that climbs over Howe Ridge to Trout Lake, a route that is 3.4 miles shorter. Horse parties favor the former route because of its low gradient, while hikers generally prefer the latter. Trout Lake and even Arrow Lake are reasonable day hike destinations from the North McDonald Road, and overnighters can camp at backcountry campsites at Arrow and Camas Lakes. Because the trail from Arrow Lake to Camas Lake is quite hard to follow and crosses five major fords, it is recommended only for determined hikers. All waters in the Camas Creek drainage are fly-fishing-only; use of spinning tackle is strictly prohibited.
