Wise River, MT
A graceful lake filled with golden trout. Sawtooth Lake rests in a cirque surrounded by Goat, Highboy, and Sawtooth Mountains. Even in summer, light snows often accent the crags and their slopes above the cold lake. The lake has a few campsites, but they’re heavily impacted, so please don’t make it any worse than it is — and in fact try to remove a fire ring or two to make it better. This hike is popular because of the unique species of fish that inhabit Sawtooth Lake. Golden trout are rare and colorful, and they grow large. The south shore of the lake is a talus slope that offers an ideal place to throw in a line.
