Here is a lightly used and delightfully primitive trail. Located less than 3 miles from the trailhead, Nelson Lake is something of an anomaly, receiving far fewer visitors than the short round-trip distance would seemingly imply. And unlike the irrigation dams so common throughout the Bitterroots, Nelson Lake’s outlet conforms to no standard architecture and is instead backed up behind an enormous rockslide—an impressive illustration of the processes driving the evolution of mountain landscapes. Highlights: A lightly used trail to a rockslide-impounded lake.
