This trail climbs up a short gulch near the foot of Gibson Reservoir. The trail passes above summer homes, so don’t expect to find pristine scenery along the lower reaches of the trail. This route can be combined with the Blacktail Creek Trail for a semi-loop day trip of 9.7 miles. The trail begins by crossing Gibson Reservoir road, then runs east to a wooded spur ridge at the edge of Mortimer Gulch. Here, the trail turns north, traversing through Douglas firs as it passes above a welter of vacation houses. After several miles, the path emerges onto open slopes. A nameless summit rises ahead, while to the south is a broad panorama of peaks and valleys that stretches from Sawtooth Ridge in the east to Allen Mountain in the west.
