Lost Horse Lake
Lost Horse Lake
At first glance Lost Horse Lake might seem an improbable day hike. No USFS trail leads to within a reasonable distance of its shores, and most casual hikers, satisfied with the scenery and fishing at Fish Lake, see little pressing need to venture farther afield. But those who have done so seldom voice regret. Hearing of the old hunter’s trail to the lake, I hiked there on a whim one September morning and thoroughly enjoyed my three-hour stay. The trail heads southeast from Bear Creek Pass and traverses boulder-studded forest before emerging into open terrain below the wilderness boundary. Attractive views of distant granite peaks continue as you enter designated wilderness and continue across talus slopes well above Lower Bear Lake and its surrounding meadows. A downstream glance takes in the upper canyon of Bear Creek, with the rock-strewn prominence of Elk Ridge arrayed along its southern rim. Highlights: A splendid backcountry lake with plenty of campsites and good fishing. Exceptional scenery.
