This challenging out-and-back course traverses a variety of landscapes, including heavy forest, stark clearcuts, and high ridgeline country, north of Lolo Peak. Missoula and its surrounding mountains are occasionally visible as you follow the trail to a long-abandoned lookout site at the crest of Lantern Ridge. Surviving evidence of the structure was largely absent at the time of my September 28, 1998 visit. Highlights: A lightly used route with exceptional views of Missoula and Lolo Peak.
