A popular hiking area with myriad side trip opportunities on a gorgeous, inlake-dotted, high-altitude plateau, plus the equally spectacular Columbine Pass. Most locals consider the Boulder River the dividing line between the Beartooths to the east and the Absaroka Range to the west. Boulder River Road ends 48 miles south of Big Timber at Box Canyon Campground. In the 1970s there was a proposal to punch the road all the way through to Cooke City, splitting the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness into two smaller wild areas. Look at a topo map and the feasibility (or lack) of such a road becomes obvious. After a hard fight by wilderness advocates, the two spectacular mountain ranges were permanently joined into one wilderness, and the controversial road proposal was dropped.
