Mount Jumbo sits to the north of Mount Sentinel across from Hellgate Canyon and the Clark Fork River. The northern portion of Mount Jumbo Recreation Area is a winter range for elk and mule deer. It is closed to hikers through the beginning of May. The hike to the Loyola “L” in the southern portion of Mount Jumbo is open year around (weather permitting). The trail is less crowded than the University of Montana “M” Trail with equally rewarding views of Missoula, the Rattlesnake Valley and the surrounding mountains.
