Saint Mary, MT
A backpack from Jackson Glacier Overlook to Lake Ellen Wilson, 10.9 miles (17.5 km); from Jackson Glacier Overlook to Sperry Chalet, 13.6 miles (22 km); or from Jackson Glacier Overlook to Lake McDonald. 20.0 miles (32 km). The Gunsight Pass Trail is an extremely popular backpacking route that ascends to the Continental Divide from the St. Mary Valley and crosses rocky ledges and alpine meadows to Sperry Chalet before descending to Lake McDonald. The high country offers access to active glaciers, excellent fishing in subalpine lakes, and viewing opportunities for many types of wildlife. The trail can be hiked in one grueling day by a dedicated hiker, but one day is insufficient to take advantage of and appreciate the varied opportunities presented by the trail. Gunsight Pass receives heavy snow which may not melt until mid-July and thus is safest in the late summer. Because the backcountry campsites fill up quickly along this trail, backpackers should register for campsites as early as possible.
