A subalpine lake in a little-used area of the Tobacco Root Mountains. Curly Lake sits in a high subalpine basin at 8,800 feet. The lake is tucked in the timber north of the trail. While the fishless lake is not unduly spectacular, the alpine meadows and meandering creek south of the lake are beautiful, offering views of alpine peaks to the south end of the cirque. In addition, chances are great you’ll have this serene little sample of wilderness all to yourself for a few hours as you take a nap on the shoreline or, better yet, stay overnight and listen to the sound of silence. As an indication of how little known this area is, none of the 10,000-foot-high peaks surrounding Curly Lake are named.
