Swan Lake, MT
An easy hike to experience Mission Mountain beauty and fish in high mountain lakes. This hike is an example of the positive changes taking place in the wilderness even with increased use. Lower Cold Lake had been severely damaged by years of high-impact camping. With the Mission Mountains Wilderness designation, the Forest Service has made an effort to help areas like Cold Lakes recover from past abuses. This Wilderness Restoration Project has been a success so far. Native vegetation has regrown over old campsites. Camping is not allowed within 0.3 mile of either lake. However, it’s a nightmare to find a suitable campsite that distance away. The brush is too thick, and there are few flat spots to put up a tent. This makes this a great day hike but a marginal overnighter. This is grizzly country, so make plenty of noise.
