An abundance of easily accessible subalpine country. Most Montanans think of the spectacular eastern front of the Selway - Bitterroot Wilderness when the Bitterroot Mountains are mentioned. However, from Lolo Pass north to Lookout Pass lies a section of the Bitterroots with a slightly different but equally appealing character. Although the northern Bitterroots are less craggy than their southern counterparts, they are heavily dotted with lakes. There are more than forty fishable lakes on the Montana side of the Bitterroot Divide, most within an easy walk from a trailhead.
