Cooke City, MT
The stark beauty of this high plateau area and a wide diversity of potential side trips. This trailhead is slightly harder to locate than most others in the Beartooths, but that hasn’t lessened its popularity. The area has lots to offer, and it receives heavy use both by locals and by those who travel from afar for a chance to experience this spectacular wild area. The trailhead lies on the eastern fringe of the section of the Beartooths that has been extensively mined, logged, and roaded. Even in the 2 miles of gravel road to the trailhead, the contrast between this area and the pristine wilderness is clearly evident. To get an early start, camp at the undeveloped campground at the trailhead. At Aero Lakes you’re many miles from the nearest machine. At night neither city lights nor smog locks the view of the stars. Nearly one million acres of pristine land surrounds you here, more than enough for a lifetime of wandering.
