Just easy, down from Vail Pass, a gentle stream valley filled with wildflowers and a bubbly creek awaits. A “century” hike, Wilder Gulch Trail hosts a variety of wildflowers and is an aesthetic delight. To access Wilder Gulch, use the bike path running downhill from Vail Pass. About a half-mile down from the pass parking area, on a C-curve, a gray metal electrical box marks a right turn that travels under the eastbound freeway lanes. From there the trail proceeds genially along a reclining valley to a tree-girt meadow. The hike described here ends in a lovely meadow, although another option is to continue up to 11,765-foot Ptarmigan Pass. Wildflower Alert: Abundant wildflowers provide a romantic setting to a magic meadow along a subalpine “century” trail just east of Vail Pass.
