Skiing to Emerald Lake
The most popular hike in the national park during the summer, the lakes above Bear Lake also attract many wilderness visitors in the winter. Using snowshoes or cross-country skis, park visitors find a winter world that is significantly different from summer in the same area. Visually, the winter woods are cleaner and simpler, with snow covering the natural forest litter such as dead branches and needles. Snow covers intricate details (rocks, leaves, twigs, and bushes), emphasizing the bold, simple shapes of large branches, rocks, and trees. Highlights: Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, wind-shaped limber pines at the lakes.
