Royal Arch Trail
You are going to have to work (and sweat) to get there, but you can savor the views (and alleviate the pain) on the smooth sun-drenched rocks beneath the Royal Arch. This towering red rock structure is as spectacular—and unique—as any of the Flatirons and makes a perfect frame for the views of the plains to the east. The arch cannot be seen from the trail, which is a good thing because you can use the mystery of the destination as motivation. This is an arduous climb. You will follow steep switchbacks up a forested ravine to a false summit, then wind through rocks and up a creekbed to the arch itself. It is the kind of walking that many adore—full-contact hiking that demands concentration, fortitude, and good hiking shoes.
