Raven's Roost and Oxen Draw Trails
The Raven’s Roost is a high, rocky point on the slope of a forested mountainside that overlooks a steep, wooded draw. Raven, eagle, or human, the views and exposure of the Roost (not to mention the steep climb up to it) invite you to rest a spell. The draw below is narrow and moist, and the trail through it crosses the seasonal stream time and time again, as though oxen had indeed picked the route. Like other ranches in the foothills west of Denver, the Reynolds Ranch has an interesting history. For a time, the park was a dude ranch, offering visitors not only the chance to ride horses, fish, and partake of other typical western activities, but they could also play the more civilized game of croquet. The area was also home to the Piano Meadows Mormon settlement, but no traces of this remain. This is a straightforward hike, a good up-and-downer, mostly under the cover of dense woodland. Choose this hike on a hot summer’s day, when the shade of the pines and the winds of the roost can both cool and charm you.
