Pettingell Peak Trail
The imposing crenellated mountain directly west of the lake is The Citadel (13,294 feet). It is a technical climb with a razor-sharp ridge and significant drop-offs. Pettingell Peak is farther along the northwest ridge of the Continental Divide. It is slightly to the northwest of the lake and its southeastern face is grassy. You should think twice before climbing Pettingell if you or your dog are fatigued or you reached Herman Lake later than 10:00 AM Storms come up suddenly in this area and generally occur in the afternoon. You will be above timberline the entire time and the climb is steep.
