Guarded on the west by the Continental Divide, pretty Hassell Lake is a short but somewhat arduous hike. En route to the scenic lake, the one-mile trail gains more than 800 vertical feet; fortunately most of that gain is in the first half of the trail when the hiker is fresh and eager. More than five dozen wildflower species appear along the way, the most interesting of which grow around the shores of the lake. The trailhead is only an hour or so from the Denver metro area. Wildflower alert: A diversity of habitats and wildflowers.
