Foothills Trail: Maxwell Natural Area
The Foothills Trail travels through three city natural areas, as well as county recreation areas along Horsetooth Reservoir, and features a wide variety of foothills topography with ponds, hills, valleys, climbs, and descents and great reservoir, city, and mountain views. It is an intermediate mountain biking trail but is easy to negotiate on foot. Making the entire round-trip on foot would be challenging; enjoying pieces of the trail is more fun. This foothills open space area is west of Lubick Stadium and offers nice Fort Collins and foothills views on moderate trails. You can climb to the top of the first foothill ridgeline above the famous Aggies A or up to Reservoir Road for a view. You can also start at the Dixon Dam parking lot and then take the Foothills Trail that edges the southwest stadium parking lot to access the area.
