Dunes Hiking
This is a make-your-own hike through the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve. Starting and exit points are suggested for a hike across the east side of the dune mass and back along Medano Creek. A few plants and various insects live in the dunes. Making footprints and seeing the patterns are great fun, as is sliding down the dunes. Hiking in the sand takes a lot of energy, but it’s an experience you won’t soon forget! Fall is a beautiful time to visit. Watch out for thunderstorms —lightning is extremely dangerous on the dunes!
