Fort Collins, CO
There are a number of Blue Lakes in Colorado. This one sits in a golden bowl in the lovely Rawah Wilderness Area west of Fort Collins. While the handsome lake itself is in the subalpine zone, surrounding areas soar into the alpine zones. Nearly 90 wildflower species may be encountered on the 4.9-mile trek, which may slow down the ambitious wildflower aficionado. It also happens to be the most easily accessed lake in the Rawah Wilderness. The trail begins along a forested rushing river, then curves up, via an old road, through evergreens. Climbing through a rocky area, it reaches small springs and creeks of great charm before ascending to a level segment above Blue Lake. Wildflower Alert: A vale of golden-bedded brooks harbor perfect capes of Oriental gardens.
