Alpine Garden Loop and M. Walter Pesman Trails
A child’s walk among tundra’s treasures followed by a downhill hike through a wind-sculpted forest are what makes this combination of trails a delight. Easily accessible from the Mount Evans Highway, the Alpine Garden Loop starts at 12,140 feet, changing little in elevation as it loops around a rocky crest. Views of Chicago Lakes Basin dominated by 14,258-foot Mount Evans first capture everyone’s interest at this windy summit. (An extra jacket, preferably hooded and windproof, is a must for this hike!) Before embarking on the hike, allow children to explore the rocky outcrop near the parking lot. Children love to climb these boulders, discovering new vistas and windless nooks where begging chipmunks and ground squirrels can be expected.
