Our Round Rock store is the latest chapter in REI's decades-long commitment to green building. The journey began in 1993 with the redesign of our Seattle flagship store, and continued with award-winning stores in Portland and Pittsburgh.
The second in a series of prototype stores (our first was REI Boulder), Round Rock tests innovative new approaches to energy efficiency, water conservation, low-impact building materials and more.
Through smart design — including the use of solar technology — REI Round Rock consumes almost 50 percent less energy than a traditionally designed building.
By resting more lightly on the earth, Round Rock embodies REI's passion for protecting and preserving the outdoors. That's the real power behind our devotion to green building.
REI Round Rock is a learning laboratory where we're discovering how green design elements perform in a busy retail setting.
Built using the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Retail pilot rating system for Commercial Interiors, Round Rock points the way to our retail future. We're excited to apply the lessons we learn here to our next prototype store — and, eventually, to other REI stores around the country.
Designing and testing green buildings is just one of the ways we're improving the environmental performance of our business, while serving as a great resource to our community. Read our stewardship report to find out more.
