Hypothermia is a potentially life-threatening drop in core body temperature, brought on by extreme or prolonged exposure to cold/wet conditions. It's a problem that every cross-country skier should be aware of and prepared for.
What makes hypothermia so dangerous is the fact that it develops quietly, often over long periods of exposure. Even cool temperatures can cause hypothermic reactions, especially when victims are exposed to water and/or wind.
The best way to deal with hypothermia is to learn how to prevent it. This means staying well hydrated, fueling your body with frequent meals and snacks, resting frequently and not over-exerting yourself, and staying dry and warm.
