Backcountry Navigation With a GPS

Description: Head out into the field for a day of hands-on GPS navigation training with our REI Outdoor School Instructors. You'll practice pinpointing your location, marking waypoints, plotting courses and creating routes in the outdoors. Learn to transfer information from the GPS to your map and from the map to the GPS. If you own a GPS unit, please bring it to get detailed instruction on its features. We recommend you attend a Map and Compass Basics class, or have a solid understanding of map and compass skills, prior to this outing.

Skills you'll learn:

  • Learn to pinpoint your location using a GPS receiver
  • Mark waypoints, plot courses, and creating routes in the outdoors
  • Learn how to use a GPS along with a map and compass

Check out the gear list.

Required Legal Form:
This course requires the participant to read and sign a liability release form before participating. Please see "Required Legal Form" for the session you are registering for. You will need to print, sign and bring the form to your class.
