Winter Navigation with a GPS
Description: Head out into the snow for a day of hands-on navigation training with our REI Outdoor School GPS instructors. You'll practice pinpointing your location while on snowshoes, marking waypoints, plotting courses and creating routes in the outdoors. Learn to transfer information from the GPS to your map and from the map to the GPS so you'll be able to find your way even in a whiteout. If you own a GPS unit, please bring it to get detailed instruction on its features. We will also have GPS units available to borrow. We recommend you attend a Map and Compass Basics class, or have a solid understanding of map and compass skills, prior to this outing. Prior snowshoeing experience is recommended (Introduction to Snowshoeing Class or equivalent skills). This is not a snowshoeing skills class and students should be able to snowshoe for 2-3 miles.
Skills you'll learn:
- Learn to pinpoint your location using a GPS receiver
- Mark waypoints, plot courses, and creating routes in the outdoors
- Learn how to use a GPS along with a map and compass
- Learn the challenges of navigating in the snow
Duration: 5.0 hours
