Trip Highlights

  • Backpack through the Colorado Rocky Mountains on a 4-day trip
  • Explore the wonders of the Rockies, from cascading creeks to towering peaks
  • Follow expert guides who impart knowledge of local flora, fauna, and history

There's something extraordinarily elemental about a backpacking trip that relaxes and recharges the heart and soul. The iconic Rocky Mountains are sure to leave visitors amazed and rejuvenated.

Our backcountry voyage begins on Rocky Mountain National Park's quiet western border outside Grand Lake, CO. Following the superbly designed and maintained Continental Divide Trail we traverse idyllic flower and wildlife studded meadows, rushing creeks teeming with trout, tumbling waterfalls, and clear alpine lakes—all the while surrounded by a sea of craggy peaks reaching heights of over 14,000 feet.

As each step carries us deeper into the wilderness, we take time to drink in our surroundings and discover the natural wonders of the Rockies. Our backcountry campsite, seven miles from civilization, sits along a clear, tumbling creek, and beneath towering snow-capped peaks. Along the journey, our guide's comprehensive knowledge of the Park's natural and human history, trails, and little-known secrets help craft the perfect weekend wilderness escape.

Also see our Rocky Mountains Backpacking – Thunder Lake that explores a different section of the park.

Trip Itinerary and Details

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

  • Day 1 - Meet in Denver for a trip orientation and group dinner.

Our trip begins today at 6 p.m. at the Denver, CO REI store. The store is within easy walking distance of our host hotel, or you may choose to meet in the lobby at 5:30pm for a complimentary shuttle to the store (please advise your Adventure Specialist if you'd like to shuttle from the hotel). Be sure to bring your pack and gear, as you'll meet your guides and fellow trekkers at this beautiful flagship store for a rundown of the trip itinerary, gear check and packing. We enjoy dinner and drinks while we get to know each other in eager anticipation of our adventure. Dinner is included tonight.

  • Day 2 - Hike to a junction of two valleys where our sublime campsite awaits.

We depart the host hotel at 8 a.m. and drive to our starting point on the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Beginning at an elevation approximately 8500 feet, we make our way into the park's backcountry where lush meadows lead to soaring peaks. Civilization is just a few miles away, but we might as well have stepped back in time and fallen in stride with the explorers of yesteryear. We stride along the rocky trails that follow the course of this glacial valley, stopping often to soak in the views of our new home. As you walk, be sure to visually inspect every meadow and rocky out cropping as this area abounds with moose, elk, and the comical and entertaining marmot. Our destination today is a junction of two valleys where jagged peaks, rushing creeks, and our idyllic campsite await our arrival, our home for the next two nights. Lunch and dinner Included.

Hiking: 7 miles with approximately 1500 feet of elevation gain.

  • Day 3 - Hike the Continental Divide to an alpine lake with only a daypack.

Today, wearing only light day packs, we explore the Park's array of natural destinations. Fantastic manifestations of geological history and current processes of nature await us around every bend or rise in the trail, impressive treasures we enjoy mostly alone; we can relish not having to fight tourists fumbling with cameras to capture the stunning beauty. We'll explore beautiful alpine lakes nestled in mountain cirques, delighting in taking a less-traveled path. Despite the grandeur of your surroundings, take time to examine the intricate details of this harsh alpine environment, from the colorful lichen, wildflowers and cute pika seeking out a life here, to the evidence of powerful winter avalanches. Tonight we return to the same camp for another great meal and evening under the stars. Those with an interest in fishing can try their luck next to camp in a creek teeming with cutthroat trout (licenses and equipment not provided).

Hiking: 8 miles with multiple options, elevation gains of 2000-3250 feet.

  • Day 4 - Take a final hike through a glacial valley, source of the Colorado River.

Wake up to the quietness our mountain hideaway offers, and savor a few moments over a steaming cup of coffee as the dew dries and steams in the morning sun. After breaking camp, we once again tread through the ancient glacial valley following the free flowing water that will eventually find its way into homes throughout the western United States – we have been camping and exploring in the literal birthplace of the mighty Colorado River. All too soon we begin to see day hikers and hear the sounds of the life we left behind just a few days ago. We shuttle back to Denver around 6pm where we bid our farewells to our new found friends. If flying out tonight, flights out of Denver shouldn't be made earlier than 8pm. Breakfast and lunch included.

Hiking: 7 miles with approximately 1500 feet of elevation loss.

Comments about REI Adventures Rocky Mountains Backpacking:

The group dynamic was awesome and the whole experience was amazing. First of all, the guides were great. They were knowledgeable, fun, and helpful. Secondly, the food was amazing (no, really!). There was plenty of food, and they even accommodated my no-meat diet. I was seriously not expecting such good food on a backpacking trip! Third, the pace of the trip was just right. I could hang in the back, middle, or front of the pack. Some of the group walked at a rapid pace, some didn't. I enjoyed that I could be in between the two (and I felt safe) and enjoy a bit of solitude.

If you have not had the opportunity to travel with REI, and are thinking about it..... I highly recommend doing so. I have been on dozens of backpacking adventures, but this was by far my favorite.

          • The Rockies have been on my "bucket list"
          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
          • The highlight was the optional climb on day 3. Getting to the top and seeing the beautiful scenery was amazing.
          • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
          • I brought snacks..... But didn't eat them. There was always plenty of food for the group (so leave your snacks at home). Also, moleskin was PRICELESS on this trip. My feet took a beating.

Comments about REI Adventures Rocky Mountains Backpacking:

Don't plan on flying out on the last night of the trip. Traffic is unpredictable and it's not worth the stress. Using the shuttle from the airport to your hotel is a good idea and once you get into the city, you can either take a cab or rent a bicycle for 8$/24hrs. Once the trip starts, there is nothing to worry about - EVERYTHING is taken care of by the guides.

            • Why did you choose this trip?:
            • The trip was a perfect fit for me. I was looking for something fun and exciting, but I wasn't looking to break the bank.
            • What was the highlight of your trip?:
            • The group I went with was incredible, guides included. Taking in the scenery that the RMNP has to offer while in the presence of great people makes the experience THAT much better.
            • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
            • I was able to spend a few days in Denver before the trip started and I would recommend doing the same. Denver has a lot of neat restaurants and microbreweries to explore - Check out the REI store, too. The place is huge. Also, call early to get your reservations at the host hotel. I called a month in advance and theytried to up the price an additional 80$!

The only con that I can think of is the price. It was far too high, but not high enough that I wouldn't recommend it to others. And not enough that I regret it either. There are far too many pros to mention about the trip. The leader, the friendships made, the sights, the smells and sounds of the mountains, etc. I'm happy to have checked "Rocky Mountain National Park" off of my life list :-) Overall I LOVED it!

Comments about REI Adventures Rocky Mountains Backpacking:

Overall this trip was sooo good. The guides (Mike and Kevin) were fabulous and extremely nice. You could go at your own pace, didn't matter what that was. It was very relaxed and they let you do what you wanted to do. The food was excellent as well. I really barely even ate my snacks because they fed us so good and they wouldn't let you go hungry, wasn't a possibility they had extra. The wildlife sightings were really great too. And the guides seemed to know a LOT about the area and you could ask them pretty much anything. We also met and talked to a ranger for a while which was very cool. It was a short trip but felt like we saw and experienced a lot.

                      • Why did you choose this trip?:
                      • I chose this trip because I have alwayyys wanted to go and see Colorado and we have done a couple other REI trips before and they have always been fun. Its also great to get to know new people who like to hike and be outdoors.
                      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                      • Highlights of the trip included seeing the two big moose up close and even the bad weather was fun because we got to see the mountains with a different eye. Getting to meet the people of the group was really good too, everyone was great.
                      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                      • My advice would just be to really bring your layers. This was the last trip and it was chilly and parts were rainy and even snowy. Didn't change the fact that we had a great time, but its nice to have lots of warm dry layers.

This trip reinforced observation from my Sept 2010 North Rim Grand Canyon Trip w REI. Specifically, out of 8 guests on this trip 6 were singles who signed up on their own without any friend. It is great to experience the comradship from like minded colleagues from across the USA.

                          • Why did you choose this trip?:
                          • Trip worked out perfectly to escape the 100+ degree days in Texas. Truly a joy to experience pleasant day temperatures and night temp where layering was a requirement. Great to experience "cold" at night in the summer.
                          • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                          • Day 1 - sighting of female moose on treck in. Day 2 - two alpine lakes with a short jump in to experience really cold water on the first lake.

                          • Bring layers of clothing. Day temp is warm with temp falling as sun sets.

Comments about REI Adventures Rocky Mountains Backpacking:

The instruction the evening before on how to pack a backpack was incredibly helpful. The guides were extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The buffalo burgers, sauteed veggies, and sourdough bread the first night were great! Because of some snow and ice, our second day's hike was cut short. One of the guides generously offered to take anyone who wanted to see a bit more of the park an optional hike after we got back to camp. This turned out to be one of our favorite hikes. Throughout, I appreciated that the guides sought to challenge us in an enjoyable way and were never patronizing. It was a perfect three days in the park!

                              • Why did you choose this trip?:
                              • My husband is from Europe and had been told by his father that the Rocky Mountains are as stunning as the Alps. We had to check it out for ourselves.
                              • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                              • The alpine scenery was stunning every step of the way. I hear that other parts of Rocky Mountain National Park are crowded. We literally saw about 8 other hikers in three days! The itinerary was so well thought out that I cannot choose a single high point. It was scenic overload.
                              • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                              • Bring rain gear, we got to use all of ours! I wish I had taken a laminated flower field guide. The alpine blooms were stunning. Our guides had one, but it would have been nice to have my own.

This was an absolutely fantastic trip in every way. The guides were awesome, Mike and Justin are such great guys with fascinating backgrounds, infinite patience and great senses of humor. The group was great, this was my second REI trip and so far has been 2 for 2 on finding fantastic travel companions. The actual hike was gorgeous, and the guides were very flexible in accommodating the hike to the varying abilities of group members, including adding on some additional scrambling for those interested. Being able to drop our packs at camp for the second day and bring just light day-packs opened up possibilities that we simply couldn't have pulled off wearing our full packs, so the itinerary was really ideal. We had some rain the first day but it really didn't present much of an obstacle. If you're at all considering this trip, go!

This was the August 18-21 trip. Weather was near perfect - mild temperatures with some rain on the first day only. Trip was very scenic and was moderately challenging (as advertised).

If you love scenery and want to enjoy it while somebody else take care of all the planning, this is a great trip for you. Majestic mountains, meadows, streams, lakes, forests along with good food and fun people are all included in this trip. The level of difficulty is moderate and the guides are letting you to choose your own pace. This is great since not everybody has the same strength but if you take your time it looks like everything is possible. At the end of the day you get a pleasant feeling of fulfillment. And again food is excellent. Sometimes you don't get such a good food at the restaurant. Guides are very knowledgeable and courteous. I loved this trip. I cannot remember any negative aspect.

This trip particularly was rated moderate plus and this is the level of difficulty I am comfortable with. I heard a lot about the beauty of Rocky Mountains and I wanted to see it. I wasn't disappointed at all.
