This trip is rated Moderate [3]. Trip members should be experienced campers in good physical condition. It is not necessary to be an expert kayaker, but we recommend that you have some previous kayaking or canoeing experience. Kayaking the Na Pali coast is a long paddle and requires that you have good core and upper-body strength. The stretch of the Na Pali Coast we paddle is remote with no easy turn-around point. You should be at ease in a small boat, be a good swimmer and be comfortable in deep water. Due to weather conditions, the hiking trails in the Waimea Canyon area may be muddy with stream crossings and can be slippery. This trail could be considered a Moderate Plus 3+. We ask that you come equipped with a spirit of adventure and willingness to pitch in and help with camp chores.
Kauai's climate is subtropical, with weather that varies more by location than by season. Average coastal daytime temperatures are in the mid-70s year-round while nighttime lows can drop into the upper 60s. During the summer months, the trade winds keep the humidity from becoming oppressive. Kauai's average annual rainfall is about 40 inches; this is what keeps the garden isle so lush and beautiful. Warm afternoon showers are not uncommon, so please bring adequate raingear. Because this trip spends a lot of time in and around water, good sun protection (long sleeves and pants, hat, sunscreen, etc.) is imperative.

Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:
We were so fortunate to have a wonderful guide Josh and fellow trip companion Ariadne along to help make this trip an experience of a liftime. The pristine private campsite the first two nights on those wonderful comfy REI sleep pads. Seeing a rare Monk Seal swim along our campsite to the incredible pristine views. Great food, storys and laughter helped mask the strenuous activitys of the day. Guide Adrian saying: "Better out than in"
Thanks for an incredible lifetime memory!!!

- It seemed to be the right fit for a Father / Daughter adventure planned at the last minute.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- The incredible experience of spending this beauty & time with my daughter who actually wanted to spend this opportunity with her dear old Dad!
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- Be prepared for all weather and most important all seas!!!! 17 miles doesn't sound so bad until the swells say "So you think you can Kayak huh????" The ratings say a 3 which I agree with except for the Napali Coast can be a solid 4 like it was for us.

Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:
I went on this trip for a graduation present and it was the best present I could've asked for! This trip allowed my dad and I to experience Kauai in the best way! From the moment we met our wonderful guide, Josh, and our fellow adventurer we knew it was going to be a blast. The food was incredible and the views were breath taking! I loved getting to learn how to standup paddle board and accomplishing the 17 mile Na Pali Coast kayak! Let me just say kayaking in Kauai... AMAZING, difficult day, but the experience and satisfaction of accomplishment is worth it! The day hike at the end of the trip was incredible too! We went beyond the "end of the trail" to see goats cliff climbing, more spectacular views and enriching history lessons and plant knowledge from our guide. I really can't complain about the trip at all! The equipment was great (best sleeping pads everrr!), the trip was well organized, the food was great, good weather, an awesome guide, and returned with alot of memories and the hope of one day returning to such a beautiful place! This trip exceeded my expectations and I'd like to first off thank my dad for taking me, REI Adventures and our guide, Josh for making it a unforgetable experience! I highly recomend this trip to anyone who likes to have a good time!

- Make sure you read the bio for the trip and use the checklist for packing. It would help having some experience with sea kayaking. The difficulty depends on what mother nature has planned. Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:
Learned alot about Hawaian history, politics, nature, and life from the guide. Learned even more about Pirates of the Caribean, where each scene was filmed and other juicy tidbits.
From my point of view, the day of the Napali Coast Kayak trip, a very substantial breakfast should have been provided. It was the lightest breakfast and the longest morning before lunch. I understand it is hard to provide that with a 4h30 am wakeup and it may be thought that seasickness is better combatted with an empty stomach, but I would have been better off with a big breakfast.
- Why Did You Choose to Travel with REI Adventures?:
- Active Adventures, All the Details Planned for Me, I Liked the Itinerary, Travel with Like-minded Outdoor Enthusiasts
- Why did you choose this trip?:
- The dates fell in the right place, was to a destination not too far away and reasonably accessible yet far enough to be an adventure, included kayaking which I wanted, and was not too long a trip.
- What was the highlight of your trip?:
- The private beach campground with outdoor heated showers, and Open Ceiling cave along the Napali Coast, which was pretty cool despite intense seasickness. I also loved the Napali Coast Kayaking in huge waves even though it was intense and tiring.
- What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
- I would do more research and discussion with REI and the guides perhaps on EXACTLY what to bring as the suggested list at times did not work for me (for example water sandals were suggested when in fact flip flops were all that were needed, and I spent a lot of time searching for the right water sandals which then gave me blisters before we even started the trip!). Also a sarong was needed for kayaking to prevent sunburned legs, really a necessity.
