Trip Itinerary and Details

Important Notice: Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

  • Day 1 - Learn how to surf or stand-up paddleboard, or search for sea turtles.

Your trip begins today in Lihue, Hawaii. Arrive at Kauai's Lihue Airport by 12:00 p.m. noon. We hit the ground running with many active options to choose from. Get out in the waves with a traditional surfing or stand-up paddle surfing lesson- a perfect introduction for beginners! After a full day of fun in the sun, your guide transfers you to our comfortable campsite located on Kauai's north shore. Steps from the waves and good swimming, enjoy the lush tropical setting while you unwind, sip a cold tropical drink and settle in as your guides prepare a delicious welcome dinner of Hawaiian specialties. Dinner included.

Stand-up paddle surfing, traditional surfing, and swimming.

  • Day 2 - Paddle Hanalei Bay while keeping an eye out for abundant birdlife.

Don your swimsuit and head out to kayak gorgeous Hanalei Bay. Refine your technique in preparation for tomorrow's big kayak as you paddle in and around the bay, enjoying the backdrop of 4,000' mountains and cascading waterfalls. Either before or after a picnic lunch, you'll have time for swimming and snorkeling in the crystal blue waters. Our next adventure is a hike (weather dependent) to Hanalei Bay Lookout. The trail is surrounded by hala, ti, wild orchid and eucalyptus, and climbs 1,200 feet to provide a rewarding and picturesque 360-degree view of Hanalei Bay and Waioli Valley. Along the way you may see coots, albatrosses, wandering tattlers and herons. Late this afternoon we return to the campsite, where dinner and an evening of stargazing await. All meals included.

    Kayaking: 5-8 miles; Hiking: 4 miles; Elevation gain/loss: 1,200’.

  • Day 3 – May through September departures - Kayak the famed Na Pali coast.

Following breakfast we take down our camp and head out on one of the best adventures in the world - a full day of sea kayaking along the famed Na Pali Coast. This is one of the most beautiful and remote shorelines in the world. Paddle below verdant 3,000’ sea cliffs dotted with dark sea caves and past secluded beaches. This is a challenging paddle with virtually no “turn-around” options; we recommend guests prepare for this trip in advance by kayaking and developing upper body strength. You should feel comfortable on the water and be a good swimmer. En route we park our kayaks at picturesque Milolii Beach for lunch. Completely isolated and only accessible by water, Milolii Beach was one of the first inhabited settlements in the state, carbon dating back to 600 A.D. when Milolii was known as a rich fishing village. Our day of kayaking ends with a landing on the westernmost beach. A private shuttle transfers us to a campground on Kauai’s west side where our guides prepare a final delicious “aloha” dinner to celebrate our time in paradise. All meals included.

Kayaking: Up to 16 miles. This is a challenging paddle day, especially if there is any wind.

  • Day 3 – December departure - Kayak the south shore past hidden coves and black sand beaches.

We are up early this morning to break camp before embarking on our paddle of the glorious south shore. We put in our kayaks at Poipu Beach and follow the coastline southwest past caverns, blowholes, hidden coves and black sand beaches. The south shore is known locally as Kauai’s "sunny side" for good reason since the rain shadow means for drier days and plenty of sunshine. Our one-way kayak is the perfect way to explore this secluded coastline. There are many highlights along this coast besides the crystal blue water. One is the greeting committee. Hawaiian green sea turtles frequent this area year-round, and it is not uncommon to have one pop up right beside our kayak. Spinner dolphins and the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal are also locals here, and it is always fun to see these playful creatures put on a show. Be sure to keep a sharp eye out for Great Humpback Whales! They migrate every year from Alaska to Hawaii to give birth and honeymoon, and winter is the best chance to see them frolicking just offshore. We will stop along the way for a picnic lunch on a deserted beach where we will also have time for a swim. Our paddle ends in Port Allen where a private shuttle transfers us to a campground on Kauai’s west side where our guides prepare a final delicious “aloha” dinner to celebrate our time in paradise. All meals included.

    Kayaking: Up to 10 miles.

Note: Winter departures cannot paddle the Napali coast due to oceanic conditions. We will kayak Kauai’s south shore from Poipu Beach to Port Allen.

  • Day 4 - Hike up onto the fluted ridges of Waimea Canyon for incredible views.

Today we switch gears and grab our hiking boots for a ten-mile loop hike. One of the most unexpected and dramatic natural wonders in tropical Hawaii is Waimea Canyon. This rugged region of deep river gorges and multi-hued cliffs is more than 10 miles long and more than 3,500 feet deep. Though Waimea may be one of the most iconic destinations in Kauai, very few visitors do more than snap a picture from the rim. Odds are that down in the canyon we will have the trails almost completely to ourselves. Your trekking poles may come in handy today as we make our way through the fragrant understory of the canyon and up onto its fluted ridges that offer incredible views of the wild Na Pali Coast. Conjure up the lost worlds of Jurassic Park and you've pretty much got the picture. Our van meets us at the end of the hike for the drive back to Lihue, arriving in town by 5 p.m. Flights out of Lihue can be scheduled for any time after 7 p.m., or choose to continue to explore the Hawaiian Islands on your own. Breakfast and lunch included. Dinner on your own.

Hiking: 10 miles rugged terrain with substantial elevation gain and loss.

Qualifications

This trip is rated Moderate [3]but some days can be Moderate Plus [3-4] depending on weather, trail and water/oceanic conditions. Trip members should be experienced campers in good physical condition. It is not necessary to be an expert kayaker, but we highly recommend previous kayaking experience, as the Na Pali coast is a long paddle and requires that you have good core and upper-body strength. The stretch of the Na Pali Coast we paddle is remote with no easy turn-around point. You should be at ease in a small boat, be a good swimmer and be comfortable in deep water. Due to weather conditions, the hiking trails in Hanalei and Waimea Canyon area may be muddy with stream crossings and can be slippery. These trails could be considered Moderate Plus [3-4]. We ask that you come equipped with a spirit of adventure and willingness to pitch in and help with camp chores.

Weather

Kauai's climate is subtropical, with weather that varies more by location than by season. Average coastal daytime temperatures are in the mid-70s year-round while nighttime lows can drop into the upper 60s. During the summer months, the trade winds keep the humidity from becoming oppressive. Kauai's average annual rainfall is about 40 inches; this is what keeps the garden isle so lush and beautiful. Warm afternoon showers are not uncommon, so please bring adequate raingear. Because this trip spends a lot of time in and around water, good sun protection (long sleeves and pants, hat, sunscreen, etc.) is imperative.

Single Travelers

If you are traveling alone we will assign you a roommate of the same gender if possible. A limited number of single accommodations are available, and are assigned only as necessary.

General Information

This trip is subject to the booking information set forth in the current REI Adventures Weekend Reservation Information. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. A full gear list and detailed pre-trip information is sent upon sign-up. We highly recommend the purchase of travel insurance through REI Adventures. If coverage is purchased at the time of your initial reservation, the 'Pre-existing Conditions Exclusion' is waived (certain exclusions apply).

We look forward to having you join us for the trip of a lifetime! Why wait? Space is limited, reserve your adventure today.

Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:

This was a wonderful trip. Our guide, Adrian, was extremely knowledgeable about the land, people, plants, and wildlife. It was like listening to a reading from National Geographic. He was a very positive person despite working incredibly hard for what seemed like all waking hours and made sure everyone had a great time. Without him the kayak adventure might have been a disaster but was instead a memory I'll treasure forever.

They pack in the activities: hiking, kayaking (the day before the day-long kayak adventure we did some kayaking practice to get you comfortable), and stand-up paddleboarding along a beautiful river landscape. You'll be tired but you won't be wasting a second - it's totally worth it.

The sights are beautiful and breathtaking, so bring the best (waterproof) camera you can get your hands on (but don't forget to experience them and drink them all in, too!).

              Wonderful trip.

              • The all-day kayak adventure. It was beautiful, rewarding, and fun!
              • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
              • Be ready to kayak all day. I have little upper body strength and managed to paddle through it all, but it took a lot of mental strength to keep going. Develop your upper body strength as the travel guide suggests to make it so you're not so concerned with your paddling performance and can take in the views with ease. Also, make sure you listen to your guide during the kayak trip!

                  • It is harder than you might think if you are really not in good shape. I am average and I did it but it was a challenge. You don't need binoculars at all. Would also recommend something for your legs on the big kayaking day because there is no sunscreen that will stay on you and if you burn easy - you will!

Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:

By far this was the best trip I have taken. We hadn't done an adventure trip but were really excited to get going. We were met by our guide Adrian with a high five and an enthusiastic welcome, which would set the tone for the whole trip. After meeting up with our fellow travelers, we got right into it. The weather couldn't have been better and I was surprised at how the tradewinds kept Kauai so pleasant and even a bit chilly at times! Our campsite was gorgeous and the sleeping pads (like one other traveler in a review mentioned) were a-ma-zing. We got to bond with our first activities and were met with a traditional Hawaiian meal for dinner. In fact, most of the food was local, which was a cool bonus to the deliciousness of everything.

If you're nervous about meeting a bunch of new people - don't be. Adrian and the rest of the staff work to make you feel right at home and work to help fix any problem with a friendly laid-back Hawaiian attitude. In fact, one of our travel buddies got sick, and it was no worry to help find other activities that they could do instead.

Aside from some great relationships you'll probably make during the trip, the 17-mile kayak along the Na Pali Coast will be something that you'll be proud to say you've done and leave your jaw-dropping for most of the trip due to the beautiful landscape and unbelievable colored water. You might even get to see a turtle or monk seal!

We came on the trip not having been to Hawaii before and a bit ignorant of the culture and history. Adrian changed that completely with his extensive knowledge about seemingly EVERYTHING and ANYTHING! We could be hiking and ask him about a plant and he'd have information about it. We could be kayaking and ask about a place along the coastline and he'd tell us about legends and history of the people who lived there. You can tell he loves this island and loves his job and that carried over into how great of a job he did as our adventure guide.

You'll end the trip wishing it were a few more days and feeling bummed to leave the new friends you've made but will have some wonderful memories and spectacular photos, guaranteed.

                      • Why did you choose this trip?:
                      • My husband and I wanted to do something awesome and this trip sounded like just the thing. We'd never been to Hawaii or had never done an adventure trip and thought that this would be a great way to combine both of these firsts.
                      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                      • The 17 mile kayak along the Na Pali Coast was amazing...but so was the food! The people we got to share the trip with were also fantastic.
                      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                      • Don't overpack! :) But make sure you have something warm for when the tradewinds are a little chilly and when you go up in altitude. Make sure you have sunscreen or pants for the long kayak day if you haven't been out in the sun a lot; my husband learned that the hard way. Make sure you have a waterproof case/waterproof camera. You WON'T want to miss capturing the amazing sights!

Comments about REI Adventures Active Kauai Weekend Adventure:

Our guide Adrian was great! He was full of knowledge, an incredible cook and tons of fun. We had a beautiful, private beach campsite the first two nights with hot showers and a port-a-potty, and had a bonfire on the beach. The bonfire the first night was a great bonding experience for the group, and we were lucky enough to be entertained by some fire dancing by our guide. A little disappointed there were no options the first day as the itinerary lead to believe. No surfing or snorkeling, we all stand up paddle boarded upstream and then back down Hanalei river. It was fun but I know some of the group was looking forward to surfing. Day 2 was very adventure packed...5-6 mile kayak in Hanalei bay, 1 hour snorkeling, then a good, fairly steep 5 mile hike on the Okolehao trail. We had the option of being dropped off in town after the hike, which was walking distance from our campsite. Good time to stock up on anything you may have forgotten to pack. Our group chose to cool down after the hike with Hawaiian shaved ice before our walk back to camp along the beach. The best of course was the big paddle day....views are spectacular, the water is amazing. We were lucky that with fairly calm waters our guide was able to take us through some caves that often are too dangerous to enter. Be prepared to "camp" the 3rd night in the mountains where it's a bit chillier. We actually stayed in a sheltered bunkhouse with a kitchen, bathrooms with hot showers, and a bonfire hut. On the final day,we were taken to some Waimea Canyon overlooks and then a hike with incredible views of the Napali Coast. It was actually a less strenuous hike than mentioned on the itinerary due to some trail closures. I brought my hiking poles but didn't need them at all. Overall, the trip was a blast. We were fed very well the entire time, accommodating all special dietary requests. We were so lucky to have such an adventurous, fun group and to have Adrian as our guide.

We were so fortunate to have a wonderful guide Josh and fellow trip companion Ariadne along to help make this trip an experience of a liftime. The pristine private campsite the first two nights on those wonderful comfy REI sleep pads. Seeing a rare Monk Seal swim along our campsite to the incredible pristine views. Great food, storys and laughter helped mask the strenuous activitys of the day. Guide Adrian saying: "Better out than in"
Thanks for an incredible lifetime memory!!!

                              • Be prepared for all weather and most important all seas!!!! 17 miles doesn't sound so bad until the swells say "So you think you can Kayak huh????" The ratings say a 3 which I agree with except for the Napali Coast can be a solid 4 like it was for us.

I went on this trip for a graduation present and it was the best present I could've asked for! This trip allowed my dad and I to experience Kauai in the best way! From the moment we met our wonderful guide, Josh, and our fellow adventurer we knew it was going to be a blast. The food was incredible and the views were breath taking! I loved getting to learn how to standup paddle board and accomplishing the 17 mile Na Pali Coast kayak! Let me just say kayaking in Kauai... AMAZING, difficult day, but the experience and satisfaction of accomplishment is worth it! The day hike at the end of the trip was incredible too! We went beyond the "end of the trail" to see goats cliff climbing, more spectacular views and enriching history lessons and plant knowledge from our guide. I really can't complain about the trip at all! The equipment was great (best sleeping pads everrr!), the trip was well organized, the food was great, good weather, an awesome guide, and returned with alot of memories and the hope of one day returning to such a beautiful place! This trip exceeded my expectations and I'd like to first off thank my dad for taking me, REI Adventures and our guide, Josh for making it a unforgetable experience! I highly recomend this trip to anyone who likes to have a good time!

                                  • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                                  • Honestly the highlight was the entire trip! It was great just being in Hawaii and experiencing the sun, surf and food! From stand up paddle boarding to sea kayaking, hiking, spotting double rainbows and eating delicious pineapple every morning... this trip is the bon diggity!
                                  • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                                  • Make sure you read the bio for the trip and use the checklist for packing. It would help having some experience with sea kayaking. The difficulty depends on what mother nature has planned. Wind or no wind, rain or shine... make sure you pack all the necessary equipment and dont forget your sense of adventure!

Learned alot about Hawaian history, politics, nature, and life from the guide. Learned even more about Pirates of the Caribean, where each scene was filmed and other juicy tidbits.

From my point of view, the day of the Napali Coast Kayak trip, a very substantial breakfast should have been provided. It was the lightest breakfast and the longest morning before lunch. I understand it is hard to provide that with a 4h30 am wakeup and it may be thought that seasickness is better combatted with an empty stomach, but I would have been better off with a big breakfast.

                                      • Why did you choose this trip?:
                                      • The dates fell in the right place, was to a destination not too far away and reasonably accessible yet far enough to be an adventure, included kayaking which I wanted, and was not too long a trip.
                                      • What was the highlight of your trip?:
                                      • The private beach campground with outdoor heated showers, and Open Ceiling cave along the Napali Coast, which was pretty cool despite intense seasickness. I also loved the Napali Coast Kayaking in huge waves even though it was intense and tiring.
                                      • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                                      • I would do more research and discussion with REI and the guides perhaps on EXACTLY what to bring as the suggested list at times did not work for me (for example water sandals were suggested when in fact flip flops were all that were needed, and I spent a lot of time searching for the right water sandals which then gave me blisters before we even started the trip!). Also a sarong was needed for kayaking to prevent sunburned legs, really a necessity.
