Comments about REI Adventures O.A.R.S. Rafting:

I took the 6 day trip through Cataract Canyon. There were 11 adults and 2 kids on the trip. I loved the location, the beautiful red rock walls and the gorgeous scenery everyday was well worth going. We went on hikes around in some of the canyons, or hiking to look at ancient ruins. We got to enjoy inflatable kayaks and SUP boards. The food was incredible, from that first call of coffee to the very last meal was delicious. I loved my guides, I loved the camaraderie of the group. If you are thinking about going GO!!!

Can't say enough about the trip. Have already recommended it and OARS / REI to friends and are planning a second trip.

              • Active Adventures
              • Why did you choose this trip?:
              • While my family has extensive backcountry experience we are DRY LAND type of people. Tried to find a trip to accomidate my children (ages 8 and 11) as well as my parents. Could not have picked a better trip!!!
              • What was the highlight of your trip?:
              • The guides did an exceptional job organizing the trip and the schedule. Food (prepared by them) was hot, plentiful, and tasteful. I have never eaten so much fresh avacado and kiwi. The other rafters were tons of fun and with 7 other children on the trip, the kids had a blast.
              • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
              • Highly recommend this trip as your first exposure to white water. The Green River in August was quite mellow but the kids were completely excited whenever the sounds of rapids filled their ears.

Comments about REI Adventures O.A.R.S. Rafting:

                    (1) We were told at the put-in point that you could not drink a beer while on the river. Nothing is OARS' trip description mentioned this. (2) Put-in date was Sunday and we found out when we stopped at the North Fork Store that there are no liquor sales on Sunday. Team Leader should have known this and advised us at the prep meeting the day before so those that wanted to buy liquor could do so. They mention this stop specifically in their trip description. (3) Drinking water- OARS uses a filter device for river water available only when the rafts are beached. They constantly preach hydration yet carry no drinking water on board for those cases when you run out while on board. I asked about this and was told I should have a larger water bottle.... (4) Some (primarily the kids) pigged out at certain meals leaving some things unavailable for others. This should be monitored by the guides and parents. (5) the last days' breakfast was announced as being a "cold" breakfast (fruit, muffins, banana bread, cereal). Some requested oatmeal. When I asked where the oatmeal was I was handed an Quaker Oats oatmeal envelope; not what I was expecting. (6) there were kids on this trip which basically ran wild without supervision from guide staff nor parents. Will never book a designated "family trip" again. (7) the Team Leader was too much of a drill sargent and really needs some leadership training. I will never take a trip again with her involved.

Overall, I was very disappointed with OARS. My reference point/benchmark were two previous Salmon River trip (Main and Lower) in 2011 and 2012 with another outfitter (which unfortuantely was unavailable). Not such a good vacation.

                    • Why did you choose this trip?:
                    • Dates coincided with my calendar. Wanted to repeat the Main Salmon trip (did it two years ago with another outfitter).
                    • What would be your advice to potential travelers?:
                    • Make sure you are OK with a "Designated Family Date" trip. Some of the kids on this trip were allowed to run wild with no concern to others on the trip.

If you like having a cold adult beverage while you float down the river think twice before signing up with OARS. If you are experienced in the outdoors and rafting, you will get tired of all the threat briefings on everything you can't do...it got very old really quick.

This was a great trip despite all the shortcomings. I doubt I'll use OARS...too many other great outfitters out there that are after the same dollar.

I loved this trip! The guides were great. The other travelers were a lot of fun and the camraderie was fantastic. I really enjoyed all the geothermal features around Old Faithful, the camp sites were great and the tents, kayaks and other equipment supplied was terrific. Our guides were great cooks, so the food was delicious and best of all, I planned none of it! The mountains were spectactular. I only wish there had been more hiking on the trip. Otherwise, it was just what I needed during a rough patch in life!

                                  • There were so many! Great people, jumping off rocks into the lake, making a rough crossing or two, visiting Yellowstone, enjoying the outdoors with other solo travelers who were totally on board for adventure and a good time.
