Bhutan: Land of the Thunder Dragon (Spring)

Spring is an ideal time to visit Bhutan, when rhododendron, magnolia and many other spring flowers are blooming and various rare bird species can be encountered. During this popular spring festival (tsechu), monks as well as laymen dress in brilliant costumes and wear masks of both wrathful and peaceful deities. They re-enact the legends and history of Buddhism in the Dragon Kingdom. The festival culminates in the spectacular showing of the four stories 350 years old Thangkha (Buddhist religious scroll), celebrating the deeds of Padmasambava (Guru Rinpoche), who is credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. We get front-row views of this social gathering, where locals attend in their finest clothing and jewelry to partake in the merry-making.

Important Notice: New in 2007, Day 1 is the day you should plan to arrive at the meeting point for the trip. This may require departing your hometown one or more days in advance and traveling on an overnight flight.

Qualifications:

This trip is rated Vigorous [4]. Trekking in Bhutan is for active people in good health, who are strong hikers. There is very little level hiking in Bhutan, and considerable time is spent at altitudes between 8,000 and 16,040 feet. A good, physical conditioning program must be undertaken to get into shape for the trip. Swimming, jogging, cycling and hiking can increase lung capacity, circulation and overall fitness. Consult your physician for advice.

Visas:

You need a current passport and appropriate visa endorsements for visiting Bhutan. REI Adventures will assist you with obtaining a visa and the necessary forms to help you with your visa requirements are included in the pre-departure information sent to you upon sign-up.

Weather:

Thimphu and Paro are both at about 8,000’. Daytime temperatures range from 65-70° F. Evenings are 55-60° F. While trekking, our highest camping location is 13,700’ and our highest point is a 16,040’ pass. Daytime temperatures of 45-55° F are usual. Nighttime is generally around freezing (32° F). Weather, especially in the mountains, can be quite unpredictable and there is always the possibility of snow at higher elevations. During cloudy or snowy conditions, evening temperatures can drop into the 20s.

Delays:

If your trip has to be delayed due to bad weather, canceled or delayed flights, sickness or other contingency for which REI Adventures or its agents cannot make provisions, the cost of delays are not included. See the trip insurance brochure.

Trip Insurance:

Hospital facilities for serious problems are likely to be unavailable and evacuation can be prolonged, difficult and expensive. The key to staying comfortable while on an active trip is layering. To get maximum comfort with minimum weight, you need versatile layers that mix and match to create the right amount of insulation, ventilation and weather protection. This gear list has been created to help you choose the proper equipment. Try to bring only what is necessary; this will help you and the field staff.

Luggage Weight Restrictions

There is a 44 pound (20 Kg) weight limit for checked luggage on the Druk Air flight. There is an 11 pound weight limit for carry-on luggage. Carry-on bags are restricted to one piece; the size not exceeding 17” x 13” x 8”.  Prior to beginning the trek, gear and clothing is divided into "trek" and "non-trek" items. Non-trek items are left at the staff office in a locked room.

Things to Consider

  • Please remember to always pack essential items such as your passport, money, eyewear, a change of clothing, hiking boots and medications in your carry-on baggage, in case your luggage is delayed.
  • Culturally sensitive dressing tips: For women: pants are fine. A skirt or skirt with tights underneath is also fine. Tights, hiking shorts and sports tops are not advised unless worn under other clothing. For men: pants are best. Men may wear hiking shorts, but they should be longer, near the knees. Men should never go shirtless.
  • Cotton is wonderful in warm weather. However, once it becomes wet, it will drain your body heat. Bring wool or synthetics such as Capilene®, MTS® and Thermax®.
  • Always test your layers before a trip. Your outer layer should fit easily over the inside ones without binding and bunching up.
  • Make sure boots are broken-in. Bring moleskin for foot treatment. Thin liner socks worn under regular hiking socks may minimize the risk of blisters. The liner sock should be synthetic, not cotton. Test your sock combination before you go on the trip.
  • Travel clothes, extra gear and purchases can be left in a storage room in our local office in Paro or Thimphu. Bring an extra, small-size duffel bag for this purpose. (Rolling duffels can be left at hotel)
  • Stuff sacks are great for sorting gear. Use different sizes/colors to differentiate contents.
  • Gifts: Please don't bring extra gifts, as these are a burden to you and the staff while trekking. The best gift is a conversation or tips where appropriate with staff.
  • Feel free to give us a call at (800) 622-2236 should you have any questions regarding the gear list. The staff at our stores and Direct Sales (800-426-4840) will be happy to help you with gear questions. Or visit REI's website at www.rei.com.
