REI Carbon-Neutral Travel

REI Adventures offsets 100% of the climate-altering carbon emissions generated by air, water and land travel associated with each of our trips.

At REI Adventures, we've long offered trips that maintain the highest standards of responsible travel. Climate change and greenhouse gases are a concern to REI. The burning of fossil fuels for transportation, including air, water and car travel, are primary sources of CO2 Greenhouse Gas Pollution. That's why we are taking steps to reduce our environmental footprint and be part of the solution to global warming.

In partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, REI Adventures purchases renewable energy credits to offset the carbon emissions generated by all aspects of our trips, including our customers' airline travel. We purchase renewable energy credits to offset the CO2 produced by each participant's flight and ground transportation. The credits, called "Green Tags", will support solar, wind and other renewable energy projects. With enough support of these "green" energy sources, the use of conventional, polluting power such as coal and natural gas can be reduced, and overall greenhouse gas pollution minimized.

REI Adventures is proud to be the first major U.S. based adventure travel company to make its travel carbon-neutral at this scale.

CO2 Greenhouse Gas Pollution

The greenhouse effect results when gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) trap some of the sun's energy and heat that is normally reflected back to space.

Global Warming

Global warming is the rise in the earth's temperature resulting from an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Green Tags

Green Tags, also called renewable energy certificates, support the production of renewable energy in the U.S. and Canada. The production of renewable electricity offsets the environmental effects of burning coal, gas and other fossil fuels in the region where the renewable generator is located, and helps shift the overall energy mix toward more renewable resources. Each Green Tag offsets the carbon produced by 1,030 miles of air travel per person."
