Who We Are

Nearly 70 years ago, 23 Seattle-area mountaineers got together to form the REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) cooperative. This hardy group of climbers was seeking quality gear at a fair price, the same values that define REI today. Since then, millions of outdoor enthusiasts have joined REI, making us the nation's largest retail co-op.

As a co-op, we're dedicated to meeting the needs of our members. We love the outdoors as much as they do, and this passion shows in our gear selection, our legendary service and our commitment to outdoor stewardship. These qualities have made us the nation's leading outdoor gear store. We currently manage more than 80 stores across the United States.

How to Suggest a New Store Location

If you have a retail location you think would make a good site for REI, then please carefully review the following guidelines for consideration:
  • 26K — 30K sq. ft. box
  • Single- or two-story with 1,500 sq. ft. cutout for stairwell
  • Freestanding or attached
  • Strong retail in proximity of site
  • Median household income $50K and above
  • 100K or more households within a 15 mile radius of site
  • Abundant parking for exclusive use
  • Easy access from roadway
  • Excellent visibility, directly off main arterials

For contact information, refer to our master broker list PDF (64k) (please do not contact REI directly). To submit a site for consideration, send the broker as much of the following information as possible:
  • Photographs (renderings if under development/construction)
  • Site or building plans
  • Information on co-tenancy
  • Area demographics and/or neighborhood information

Thank you for your interest in REI!
