Demographics

At REI, we devote significant resources to help create a work environment that is inclusive for all employees, members and customers. We accomplish this through focused efforts such as training our staff, outreach to the communities we serve, and the goals and objectives we establish annually in our Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. Within the co-op, we pay careful attention to demographics to ensure we have a good balance from age to ethnicity to gender.

Challenges

At this point in time, our workforce is not a full reflection of the increasing diversity of the U.S., and this is mirrored with our peers across the outdoor industry. As included in the Diversity and Inclusion section of our report, the current economy has slowed growth in our industry. This affects the number of new employees we will be able to hire presently and in the near future, and affects the pace of the progress we can make in this area.

Looking Forward

We are committed to diversity and inclusion for the long-term, and we believe that long-term trends provide a more accurate and holistic way to track measurable progress. However, in the short-term our success in recruiting talented individuals from diverse backgrounds has been hampered by the overall slowdown in hiring in REI.

In the future, developing the skills and talents of our existing employees will be an important effort in the future as business needs and market trends rapidly shift.
