As we head toward 2008 and our 70th anniversary year, REI has never been in
better shape. Business is strong, our financials are sound, our employee team
is highly regarded, and we continue to lead as a business citizen.
Such success allows us to meet your annual patronage refund expectation while
setting aside record dollars for giving that supports conservation, recreation
and engaging young people in outdoor activities and stewardship.
The board is dedicated to working in support of your interests. In 2006, our
President and several REI leaders held two gatherings with a representative
sample of members in Denver, Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia. I had the pleasure
of attending the Atlanta event in November, which offered insightful
conversation about the co-op, membership, our products and services, the
quality of our team and the importance of the outreach and stewardship we do
in our communities. The experience confirmed my enthusiasm for the co-op’s
positive direction and gave me a renewed appreciation for the trust you place
in the board. This event is just one of a number of things that the co-op is
doing to listen, understand and support the needs of our large and varied
membership.
Two board members who have worked diligently on your behalf over the years are
departing the board this spring because of recently adopted twelve year term
limits. Our longest serving director, Bill Britt, is stepping down after 24
years of service. Angel Rodriquez, who joined the board in 1993, also will be
leaving at the completion of his current term. Both Bill and Angel have been
long-term and passionate contributors, as well as wonderful, thoughtful
colleagues. Both will be deeply missed and the co-op owes them a debt of
gratitude for their service.
We’ve enjoyed a remarkable year and I want to thank you for your patronage and
participation in the co-op. We look forward to doing even more to help get you
outside in the year ahead.
